By Jim Bonomo / July 5, Glendalough Distillery, just south of Dublin, Ireland, was founded by five friends with a love and passion for the tradition of Irish Whiskey. The monk proudly pictured on Glendalough’s revamped bottle design pays tribute to the monastic settlements that peppered this region during medieval times, but the whisky in the bottle is a far more modern take on such classic liquid. This comes bottled at 42% ABV, brought down to this strength by Wicklow mountain water. It was with a certain amount of trepidation that I agreed to receive today’s whiskey as a gift from the good people of Glendalough distillery. This whiskey wasn’t just gifted; it was also hand-delivered, in a crate, with a Tuath glass and wooden coasters made from the trees used to make the Irish Oak barrels.

It's made from a mashbill of malted and unmalted Irish barley, and obviously distilled in a pot still - the whiskey wasn't distilled by Glendalough, though it was distilled to their specification by an unnamed distillery.
It's matured in bourbon casks and then finished for a year in Irish virgin oak casks, made from sustainably felled year old trees from the forests surrounding the distillery.
Nose: Raw malt aromas, with tannic oak, creamy vanilla notes and some oak char, with a wave of cinnamon spice.
Palate: Crystallised ginger and candied citrus, banana custard and maple syrup, leading into green oak and dried herbs. Finish: Aromatic clove and more creamy vanilla, alongside some red berries and toasted oak.

I jest. The same applies to whiskey. I'm halfway through the bottle now, and I'd have to say that I quite like this whiskey. I'm not a sophisticated aficionado, but this is a drinkable whiskey.
I'll by it again. As a side note, I'd like to say that this is a new Irish whiskey distillery opened I think we could use more diversity in Irish whiskey, like we have with Scotch, so we should all support the new Irish distillers.
I'm glad you all agree. Whiskey is not my first choice when it comes to hard liquor. However, when leaving Ireland for home, there was a tasting at the duty free in Dublin airport.
I love this whiskey and hope I can get more once the one bottle I bought runs out. Very pleasantly surprised with this Irish Whiskey.
I hadn't heard of it before I saw it at the local shop here where I live outside Boston. It's smooth and the mellow vanilla, caramel, and spice notes sit well with my palate.
Will definitely be a go-to of mine! I'm not an expert by any means, but tell me if you don't get bubble gum on the nose. It's sweet, but a candylike sweetness, not fruity.
Finish is smooth. I just love its smooth vanilla flavor. I'm hoping that I get a bottle of 7 year old Glendalough for Christmas.
This comment comes from someone born within 10 miles of Bushmills, Co Antrim. Was very excited based on what I had seen here earlier.
Opened it up and poured some in a glass with one cube of ice. Initial impression was not good - harsh smell, almost of petrol - very high alcohol sniff.
Fortunately I braved it out. Glendalough has just a little bit of the harshness, but also a hint of sweet honey? No burn on the throat at the end.
If you can get over the initial sniff you will be very pleased! Flavourful and sweet, this easy-drinking whiskey is distinctly Irish.
Surprisingly good for such a young whiskey. Special offers, recommendations and expert advice to your inbox! Unsubscribe at any time.
